A: I agree with AARP's approach. I was honored to organize the Service Nation Summit and Coalition, of which AARP was a leadership member. Your support was essential in passing the Serve America Act.
This legislation will greatly expand opportunities for national and community service, including more opportunities for older Americans to serve. It will provide for more service people who can work to support senior citizens staying in their own homes.
This issue is personal for me as I have two elderly parents who but for the support of my sister, would not be able to stay in their home. With the great blessing of our population living longer, we must make adjustments to our long-term care system.

Organized successful "Save AmeriCorps" coalition
In June of 2003, when the AmeriCorps program experienced a dramatic funding cut of 80 percent overnight due to mismanagement in Washington and partisan politics, Alan gathered with other service leaders to organize the "Save AmeriCorps" coalition.
This effort included an extensive grassroots and grasstops campaign which culminated in a 100 hour round the clock "citizens hearing" in the Capitol in which more than 700 service leaders,
AmeriCorps supporters, community leaders, AmeriCorps alumni, business leaders and governmental leaders testified. This effort led to half of the AmeriCorps funding being restored in
2003 and to all of the previous funding plus a 100 million dollar increase appropriated for 2004 -- enough to grow AmeriCorps from 50,000 participants annually to 75,000.

Special interests pollute our politics: end PAC money
The Citizens for Alan Khazei campaign announced today that it raised more than $1 million. Khazei, who raised more than $1 million without taking a dime from PAC and lobbyist money, challenged the other candidates to join him in refusing to take
PAC and lobbyist money.Alan Khazei said, "I pledged that I would not take a dime of PAC and lobbyist money because I believe special interests are polluting our politics and preventing meaningful change on the central issues facing our country, from
health care reform to climate change, to creating jobs, tax fairness, energy independence, and more."
Khazei continued, "Today, I'm challenging all of my opponents to join me in taking a pledge to refuse money from PACs and lobbyists.
If you have already taken it in this campaign for U.S. Senate, you should give it back. All of us who seek to serve the citizens of Massachusetts should only be beholden to the people, not to the special interests.

Refuses PAC money and lobbyist campaign donations
Alan Khazei will be the kind of Senator the founders of this country imagined for the Senate when they drafted the Constitution--not a career politician but a public citizen, a community, state or national leader not in government office but in
the great office of citizen. And that is why Alan is the only candidate in the race refusing to take PAC and lobbyist money. Alan only wishes to be beholden to the people and their interests.
