Jim Martin on Principles & Values

Democratic Senate Challenger

Voted for Jon Edwards in Georgia primary

The two remaining Democratic U.S. Senate candidates sparred Thursday in Macon for a televised debate. Vernon Jones and Jim Martin argued over an issue that's been popular for both campaigns lately: Who voted for whom?

The Martin campaign repeatedly has noted that Jones voted for Pres. Bush in 2000 and 2004. Jones, who considers himself a conservative Democrat, has been unapologetic. But he took a shot at Martin this week, telling the media he had evidence that Martin didn't vote for Sen. Barack Obama in Georgia's February primary.

Martin initially told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his vote was a private matter. Soon after, he acknowledged voting for John Edwards in that race, though Edwards had dropped out by then.

Thursday, the Martin campaign put out its own news release, calling attention to Federal Election Commission records showing Jones donated nearly $2,500 to the Georgia Republican Party in 2001.
