Christine Drazan on Social Security

Protect core services while limiting growth of government

Both candidates were asked about homelessness programs. Kotek pointed to efforts when she became governor and declared an emergency on unsheltered homelessness "when I came in on Day 1."

Drazan said she would emphasize a focus on recovery and require accountability from people living on streets. "What we're doing in homelessness is not working," Drazan said. Drazan criticized government that had become too big and described it as inefficient. Drazan said she would protect core services while limiting growth of government.

Both candidates agreed to the importance of social service programs such as SNAP. Drazan said, as someone who grew up on social services, she would "protect access to food for Oregonians," which she noted was one of many programs run poorly by current state leadership. "This is a point where the government has got to function. Oregonians depend on these programs and these services and the state needs to be a partner in that and not a barrier," Drazan said.
