Teri Hourihan on Social Security

Option for carefully regulated private investment

Q: Your opinion on "Privatize Social Security"?

A: I do not support eliminating or fully privatizing Social Security, but I would be open to allowing individuals to voluntarily choose between the traditional Social Security system and a carefully regulated private investment option. No one should be forced into private accounts or required to put their retirement security at greater risk. Any alternative should include strong safeguards, transparency, and protections for the existing Social Security system while giving individuals greater choice in how they plan for their retirement.
