Create 1,000 new work-based learning opportunities in RI

Raising incomes is our best defense against rising costs and our best offense for growing our economy. That's why, just under a year ago, we launched an initiative called Rhode to Prosperity that seeks to raise incomes in Rhode Island households. The budget I will submit will call for an investment to create 1,000 new work-based learning opportunities in Rhode Island, and it will call for an enhancement of Real Jobs RI to train an additional 500 Rhode Islanders. Jobs in the life science sector are good-paying jobs

For over a decade, Rhode Island leaders have talked about how Massachusetts is a leader in life science and that Rhode Island could be as well. Jobs in the life science sector are good-paying jobs usually commanding six figures. We want these jobs in Rhode Island to help raise per capita income. To grow the talent pipeline and solidify Rhode Island as a life science leader, my budget will propose building a new life science school at the University of Rhode Island through a bond referendum. [On minimum wage during COVID]: Make the labor market more equitable. Increasing wages in various underpaid fields is long overdue. In 2021, Governor McKee signed the Fight for 15 into law. However, childcare workers, nursing home staff, and tipped workers are severely underpaid. There must be a target focus on these workforce fields, specifically in lieu of the recent trend of workers leaving their jobs (now known as "The Great Resignation"). Enacted pay equity regardless of gender or ethnicity

[On pay inequity]: "I'm proud to support women's health and equity. Today, Rhode Island is closing a number of discriminatory gaps and eliminating a collection of practices that have unfairly impacted women for generations," said McKee.
