Susan Bysiewicz on Homeland Security

If we had a draft, Iraq & Afghan wars would be shorter

The two candidates were asked about national defense and whether they backed a return of the draft. Bysiewicz did not directly respond, but she said she doubted the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would have dragged on as long as they did had there been a military draft in place.

Murphy was unambiguous, calling the reimposition of the draft "a dangerous idea." Instead, suggested a war tax as a way to ensure every American has a stake in the battles the U.S. engages in overseas. "If you want to go into an engagement that's going to cost your country trillions of dollars...then let's pay for it as a nation," he said. "When was the last time you heard of a Victory Garden?...We didn't do that over the last 10 years so it was just easy to put blinders on while other people fought those wars."

Close bases overseas and bring troops home

Asked what to do if another commission is named to close bases around the country, Murphy said the state's investments in the Groton submarine base and its support of training personnel has made it a place to keep open. He said President Obama's plan to enhance the role of air and sea puts Connecticut in a good position.

Both Tong and Bysiewicz said we need to start closing bases overseas, bringing home the troops and support their education.

Maintain veterans' care; maintain New London sub base

I learned a lot about honoring veterans from my family. My father, three uncles and my aunt served in World War II. Our veterans deserve our commitment and we must resolve that we will never leave them without the care and benefits they have earned serving our nation.

Support our Naval Submarine Base in New London: Susan will fight to keep construction and maintenance contracts in the hands of the best trained workers in the world.
