Tom Steyer on Immigration

Democratic Presidential Challenger; CEO

Trump is only against immigration for non-white people

Bernie Sanders: I would restore the DACA program. Trump thinks mistakenly that he is going to win reelection by dividing us up. We are going to win by bringing our people together, black and white and Latino.

Tom Steyer: This president is not against immigration. He's against immigration by non-white people. This is his attempt to divide us on race. Since the very first day he started running for president, he's been vilifying non-white people. He's been trying to inflame his base & scare them that if white people lose control of this country, that they're going to lose control of their lives. As somebody who lives in a majority-minority state, which is California, what he's doing is so wrong on so many different levels. I agree with Sen. Sanders. We have to reframe this argument completely. We have to go back to the idea that every American is worth being a full human being on every right. This is a racial argument by a racist president who's trying to divide us and who's vilifying people.

Decriminalize unauthorized border crossings

We don't have to trade border security for compassion -- it's un-American and ineffective. We can have a secure border that is still open for commerce, travel, and legal immigrants. I support decriminalizing unauthorized border crossings. These matters are better handled through civil proceedings.

Ours is a nation of immigrants. This is a nation that leads with compassion and offers opportunity to those willing to do the hard work to build a better America. For America to flourish, this has to be a place where immigrants can flourish too, which is why I support the DREAM Act, a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in America today, would overhaul ICE, and would update our asylum policies to match our values.

Trump's border policy is a crime against humanity

Q: LGBT asylum-seekers are being denied parole in detention centers. Two have died in ICE custody due to lack of access to HIV care. At least 24 immigrants have died in ICE custody. What will you do?

STEYER: What we've seen from ICE in terms of inhumanity, this is a perfect example, but it's not the only example. I think it's absolutely critical for the USA to treat people in a humane and decent fashion. It's very obvious that this president and this administration has chosen to not only break the international laws in their treatment of asylum-seekers, but to break the basic laws of humanity. When I think about why I started the "Need to Impeach campaign" two years ago--yeah, he's a criminal; he more than has earned impeachment; but it goes much beyond this, and it goes to exactly this kind of issue. The president of the United States committing crimes against humanity like this, in our name, is something that we should end right now, certainly the first day of my presidency.

Fight deportation and expand services for immigrants

As the migrant crisis at the southern border ramped up last year, Steyer donated $1 million to legal aid groups working to assist immigrants facing deportation. He said it was vital that legal services for immigrants seeking assistance "be expanded and strengthened" until the U.S. was able to address the issue in "a comprehensive and humane way." On its website, NextGen America states that a system that profits off of immigrants' labor without offering them a path to citizenship is "inherently unjust."

Failing to offer a path to citizenship is inherently unjust

For centuries, immigrants have come to America in search of a better life--and made vital contributions to our economy, our culture, and our society. But across the country, immigrants' are under attack and families live in fear of being torn apart. A system that depends upon the labor of immigrants, but fails to offer a path to citizenship, is inherently unjust. This broken system hurts us all.

We stand for a nation that welcomes immigrants and respects their rights.

$2.3M to recruit and train immigrant advocates

Democratic mega-donor Tom Steyer, is stepping up support of immigrant rights with a $2.3-million donation to the University of California Immigrant Legal Services Center and seven other organizations. The gift from Steyer's nonprofit, NextGen America, will support a national legal services network to help recruit and train more advocates for immigrants. About $90,000 will help the UC center hire a full-time immigration attorney for a year at UC Riverside, where Steyer visited Friday.
