CNN "State of the Union" interviews for 2025 races: on Technology

Lee Zeldin: No state or federal electric vehicle mandates

Q: One way that you have defended the change that the government is not going to regulate carbon dioxide, is to say that this is going to help consumers save money, basically, pay less for their cars.

ZELDIN: As it relates to carbon dioxide, I think it's important for people to note that there has been a greening of the planet that's been taking place. It's important to note that emissions have been down. And part of your question was also with regards to the amount of money that's being saved. We at the Trump administration promote consumer choice. We don't believe that states and the federal government should be advancing any form of an electric vehicle mandate. This proposal rescinds the greenhouse gas emissions on vehicles that followed, light, medium, and heavy-duty, and the off-cycle credits like the incentives for the hated start-stop feature and other aspects that we have heard from Americans from across this country.

Bernie Sanders: Study impact of A.I. on the mental health of our country

Q: You suggest a moratorium on new A.I. data centers--CEOs would say you would be stifling entrepreneurship and innovation.

SANDERS: Well, I look at it differently. As a nation, we have got to do it. Is technology bad? Of course it's not. There are good aspects, bad aspects. The function of technology must be to improve life for human beings, not make Musk and Zuckerberg and Bezos even richer.

Q: What are some of the other recommendations you want Congress to take?

SANDERS: We need to vigorously study the impact that A.I. is having on the mental health of our country. Among other things, kids can't read books anymore. It's too hard. Their attention span is too weak. So what we need to do is, I worry very much about kids spending their entire days getting emotional support. So we have got to take a hard look. And if we conclude that these technologies are creating more isolation, more loneliness, more mental illness, you know what? We have got to figure out a way to stop it.
