Jack Reed: Suspend aid to Egypt while military crushes protestors

Q: Why are we sending a billion and a half dollars to Egypt every year, most of that to the military, when they're crushing protestors in the street?

REED: Well, the acts of the last few days by the Egyptian military are completely unconscionable and I do believe we have to change our aid. I think also we have to have included in the legislation a national security waiver because we have to give the president not only the responsibility to deal with the government of Egypt, but also the flexibility. And we have to recognize, this is a long-term process. One of the obvious facts of a transition from authoritarian government to democracy, it takes a long time and it's not a straight line. And so, we have to have a policy that expresses our outrage really at the military, but also gives the president the tools to, we hope, engage them. I do believe that we can send a strong signal by suspending aid. The president has already suspended the F-16 transfers.

Jack Reed: Allow in Syrian refugees looking for opportunity

[Reed sipped tea at an] award-winning restaurant opened by refugees from Syria's civil war. "One of the things this meeting emphasizes is how important refugees are to our history," Sen. Jack Reed said in the restaurant as he and refugee advocates circled a plate of baklava. "The president is proposing to eliminate that."

Reed visited in response to a recent announcement by the Trump Administration that it plans to lower the number of refugees the United States would accept next fiscal year to 18,000, the lowest number since 1980. Last year, the administration reduced the cap to 30,000 from 45,000.

Reed opposes the cuts, as well as moves by the administration to give cities and states new powers to refuse to accept refugees.

"People come here looking for opportunity," Reed said. Reed and the advocates said that refugees are put through a rigorous vetting procedure and are in fact "the most vetted population in the U.S."

Mark Zaccaria: American colors don't run, but they have been fading

Mark Zaccaria beat out Kara Young 151 to 14 for Senator. Zaccaria pointed to the "grand ol' flag" behind him and said that the American colors don't run, but they have been fading. He wanted to bring brightness back to the "colors" by revitalizing the America he grew up in instead of the "catastrophic" state it is in now.

Seth Magaziner: Our international alliances are as important as ever

Seth supports continued humanitarian and military aid to the people of Ukraine as they fight back against Vladimir Putin's immoral and illegal invasion of their country. Putin's invasion has demonstrated that our international alliances are as important as ever. American security depends on a strong Europe and a strong NATO who will stand up for democracy and against authoritarianism.

Patricia Morgan: Remain Israel's staunchest supporter in a dangerous world

Israel is America's strongest and most reliable ally in the Middle East. They are a true democracy and we must remain their staunchest supporter in a dangerous world.

Israel must know that the United States will give them the support and time they need to achieve that goal. We must support Israel with the arms and technology they need to permanently eliminate Hamas and the other Iranian proxies, so they may live again in peace and security.

Jack Reed: Essentially, this is Trump surrendering to the Russians

Essentially, this is President Trump surrendering to the Russians. This is not a statesman or a diplomat. This is just someone who admires Putin, does not believe in the struggle of the Ukrainians and is committed to cozying up to an autocrat. And that, I think, is going to be wrong because Putin will not stop in Ukraine. He will begin in a campaign, both clandestine and in many cases overt, to undermine the other governments in Eastern Europe and it'll create chaos.
