Heitkamp: "I completely understand the frustrations that many
North Dakotans have about our property tax system. With that said, I oppose Measure 2 because it centralizes control over education and local government services in Bismarck rather than where our citizens live."

I have supported policies to ensure accountability in education is coupled with adequate local flexibility. I sponsored the Innovate America Act, which would increase the number of STEM schools and place increased emphasis on developing STEM education.

Supports abolishing the federal Department of Education
The more education is locally controlled and provided, the better it is for children and families. Educational choice is imperative for families to give their children the best possible education. The federal government has no place in education.
All restrictions and barriers that make it more difficult for families should be removed. I will also support abolishing the federal Department of Education, while block-granting funds at a per-pupil cost to each state over a 10-year phase out period.
