BOOK REVIEW by OnTheIssues.org: Herman Cain dropped out of the presidential race only 8 weeks after releasing this book on Oct. 4, 2011. He was the frontrunner for most of those 8 weeks, but was plagued by allegations of past sexual harassment and a 13-year extramarital sexual affair. Those allegations caused Cain's popularity and support to slip, until on Dec. 3, he withdrew from the race. Cain was the only candidate in the top tier of the Republican primary who was not an elected official. As such, Cain had a real outsider's perspective -- he was not part of Washington nor part of any political power structure. Some of the other several governors running for the GOP nomination claim pseudo-outsider status because they're from "outside the Beltway" -- true, but they're part of the power structure of their respective states, and hence not really outsiders at all. The mainstream media did not like Cain -- perhaps because he was a real outsider whom they could not quite understand. The mainstream media hounded Cain out of the race. From the first day sexual harassment was alleged, the mainstream media pushed for Cain to leave the race -- even when all his accusers were anonymous. That sort of media hounding is a failure of the press -- mainstream reporters seem to think that citizens wanted 24-hour coverage of the same breathless coverage over and over again. If the mainstream press reported on the issues with the same fervor with which they report scandals, the American electorate would be a lot better off. Cain made his fortune as a businessman (see his book CEO of Self for his business philosophy), and made his name as a radio talk show host (see his book They Think You're Stupid for his political philosophy). This book focuses on Cain's personal biography as he considers relevant to the presidential race -- and indeed, some of his opponents accused Cain of hawking his book when he should have been running his campaign. However, Cain had the ability -- as none of his opponents do -- to connect with normal citizens, because he IS a normal citizen. Cain was a breath of fresh air in the Republican primary. For anyone who cares about the American people or a solid debate over American values or about a diversity of voices in American politics -- as opposed to those who care about who has "earned" the nomination, or who has the proper stances to win the Republican nomination or to take on Obama -- for anyone who cares about America, Cain will be missed. -- Jesse Gordon, jesse@OnTheIssues.org, Dec. 4, 2011
