Abigail Spanberger on Social Security

Everyone should be able to count on full earned benefits

Biden signed the "Social Security Fairness Act" into law, legislation co-sponsored by Spanberger. The act aims to boost retirement benefits for some retirees that draw public pensions, such as former police officers and firefighters. Spanberger, who has co-sponsored the bill for much of her congressional tenure, said in a statement that "every Virginian who paid into Social Security should be able to count on their full earned benefits to support them in retirement."

Social Security & Medicare: bedrock of dignified retirement

Rep. Spanberger strongly believes that Social Security and Medicare are the bedrock of a dignified retirement. In Congress, she is focused on strengthening these programs and ensuring their stability for future generations of American workers. She is committed to keeping our country's promises to working families, and she strongly opposes radical efforts to put the retirement and earned benefits of hardworking Americans at risk.

Pledges to protect Social Security from privatization

Abigail Spanberger--a former CIA intelligence officer--is challenging incumbent Congressman Dave Brat. Brat campaigned to slash seniors' earned benefits since first running for Congress in 2014, telling CNN last year, "[We're] going to have to do some major cuts" to Social Security and Medicare. Spanberger opposes "any attempts" to privatize either program or to cut benefits, and pledges to "protect Social Security and Medicare so we can meet our obligations to seniors, now and into the future."
