Carl McCall on Civil Rights

2002 Democratic Challenger NY Governor

Supports Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act

Carl McCall has supported the enactment of Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act (SONDA) which would amend the State's Human Rights Law, and ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, race, gender, and religion. Also, Carl McCall supports inclusion of "transgender and gender identity" to the SONDA legislation after its initial passage and will push for that change.

Supports Vermont-style civil unions

Carl McCall supports the enactment of Vermont-style civil union legislation, affording gay and lesbian couples many of the same rights, benefits, and privileges afforded to married couples. McCall has voiced his support for civil unions offering to work with the gay and lesbian community in developing the appropriate legislation.

Equal pay for comparable work for women

We need a new commitment in this state to support women's success, at home, at work, and in the community. It is unacceptable that in the strongest democracy in the world, women are paid 73 cents for every dollar a man earns for the same job. As Governor, I will make it a priority to finally get a pay equity law passed that ensures equal pay for comparable work in New York State.
