Jim McGreevey on Tax Reform

Former Democratic NJ Governor

2004: Instituted temporary millionaire's tax

When McGreevey was governor and desperate for money, he and the Democrats in the legislature increased taxes on the wealthy--a hike known by its shorthand name as a millionaire's tax. It applied to households (not necessarily individuals, but households) earning $500,000 or more, so really it was a half-millionaire's tax. Corzine, wanting to limit deep spending cuts in an election year despite the state's recession-battered budget, and the legislature passed their own millionaire's tax in 2009-- three new temporary tax rates that began at $400,000 of household income. They engineered it to die on December 31, 2009. It did. Lawmakers had a few sessions left to send Corzine a renewal. They didn't.

Christie ran a no-tax-hike pledge. His critics claimed he'd cut taxes for his millionaire friends. It was a lie. Democratic efforts to raise taxes on millionaires--actual ones, not half-millionaires--also continued in Christie's 2nd year, ending with a Christie veto.
