Jon Hansen Prohibit medical treatment for transgender minors

HB1080: prohibit certain medical and surgical interventions on minor patients.

Summary by CNN, February 13, 2023:HB 1080 outlaws the prescription and administration of puberty-blocking medication in patients under the age of 18, as well as sex hormones and surgery related to gender transition. Health care providers who violate the new law risk civil suits and losing their professional or occupational licenses. Gender-affirming care is medically necessary, evidence-based care that uses a multidisciplinary approach to help a person transition from their assigned gender--the one the person was designated at birth--to their affirmed gender--the gender by which one wants to be known. Opponents of the bill emphasized that the measure would be harmful to transgender children and was a government intrusion into medical decisions.Legislative Summary:Passed House 60-10-0 on Feb/2/23; passed Senate on Feb/9/23; signed by Governor Kristi Noem on Feb/13/23.

Expand family leave benefits to 100% of salary for 12 weeks

Currently, the state provides paid family leave benefits at 60% of an employee's salary for 8 weeks. I am proposing that we extend that to 100% of salary for 12 weeks. This new policy won't just cover new births or adoptions--it will also cover taking care of a child, spouse, or parent with a serious health condition, or a situation where a spouse is called to active-duty military service. Private sector companies will have the opportunity to be a part of the state's risk pool, as well.

My vision: maintain our family traditions & way of life

I grew up with a Dad who dreamed of all four of his kids being able to stay on the family ranch if they wanted to. My vision for South Dakota is the same. We must ensure that every South Dakotan can build their life here and make a good living, so they can provide for their families and maintain our traditions and way of life. I am committed to four pillars of protection: keeping taxes low, limiting government regulation, fighting government intrusion, and keeping government open and honest.
