Ashley Hinson on Free Trade

Hold bad trade partners accountable on unlevel playing field

Q: In August, President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian products. Your thoughts?

Hinson: We absolutely need a great trade relationship with Canada, with Mexico. Whoever will open their markets to us. We need more markets and we need more opportunity. What we don't need is an unlevel playing field, and Canada should not have walked away from that deal. I think what's important is we are actually holding bad trade partners accountable when they are breaking the rules and not playing fair. China being one of the worst, obviously, at this, but they have been using Canadian companies to get steel into the United States cheating and not paying what they should to access our markets. We should be negotiating and getting them to the table to get better deals and more access to markets. And we should be holding the bad actors accountable.

Turek: The tariffs and the war in Iran has hurt Iowa. Our farmers need open trade, need open markets. The tariffs have led to a decimation of markets.

Anti-tariffs, according to PVS survey.

Hinson supports the PVS survey question on trade barriers

Project Vote Smart inferred whether candidates agree or disagree with the statement, 'Trade: Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?' PVS self-description: "The Political Courage Test provides voters with positions on key issues. Historically, candidates have failed to complete our test due to the advice they receive from their advisors and out of fear of negative attack ads."
