Jim Gilmore on Foreign Policy

Senate challenger 2008; previously Republican Governor (VA)

Pursue terrorists into Pakistan, but maintain secrecy

Gilmore, who chaired a federal homeland security commission in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, agreed with Warner that US troops should have the right to enter Pakistan in search of terrorists. But Gilmore also stressed that Pakistan remains a US ally. "I think I would not sit here in an open forum today and say and describe the country of Pakistan as one of the great potential threats," Gilmore said.

Let the world know that we have their interests at heart

Q: Do you believe that America's unpopularity throughout the world is a legitimate concern?

A: Yes, this is a concern because we need others to further freedom and security in the world.

Q: How can it be rectified without disavowing our foreign policy?

A: We need to let people across the world know that we have their interests at heart, as we did during the Cold War. This helps American interests.
