Erskine Bowles on Families & Children

Extend the Family Medical Leave Act to reservists families

The Family Medical Leave Act requires employers to give up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave if an employee has a new child, has a serious medical condition, or has a severely ill family member. Bowles would expand Family Medical Leave to include reserve families. This will allow workers whose spouse is called to active duty to take time off work and get their affairs in order.

Extend the Child Tax Credit to Grandparents

A grandmother with a son serving overseas pointed out that grandparents often have to take care of the children of activated reservists. But because activation is for a limited time, these children are not declared legal dependents, and grandparents are thus ineligible for the child tax credit. Bowles will change tax laws to make sure that grandparents who are taking care of the children of activated guardsmen are eligible for the child tax credit.
