Legislature must act on conforming to federal tax changes

Maine Governor Janet Mills says she's not ready just yet to conform to some of the federal tax law changes included in the Trump administration's "big, beautiful bill." The governor's office says it won't implement things like no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and increasing the standard tax deduction. The governor says she wants more data and for state lawmakers to have a say before moving forward. Republicans say the move cuts off $425 million in direct tax relief. Raise cigarette excise tax for the first time in two decades

Maine has the highest adult smoking rate in New England. We also have the cheapest cigarettes of nearly every state in New England, and we have not raised the cigarette excise tax in two decades, unlike every other New England state. When more than one third of Maine cancer deaths each year are caused by smoking, our current policy doesn't make sense. Recognizing that a higher cost to cigarettes can dissuade some people from smoking, my budget proposes a $1 increase to the cigarette excise tax.
