Rick Bennett on Tax Reform

The property tax is inequitable; it hits in hard ways

Q: What taxes would you seek to lower, or raise?

BENNETT: Our taxes overall are far too high in this state. All the comparisons and studies show it. It's holding back growth. The focus of my administration will be on the property tax first. The property tax is inequitable. It hits everybody in this state in hard ways. It's volatile. With revaluations, people can realize that suddenly they are paying taxes. We have specific means of addressing it. I would expand the fairness tax credit, which already was expanded in terms of its eligibility with legislation I put in.

PINGREE: We should open up our constitution and think about how we tax second homes owned by nonresidents, wealthy folks here in the summertime.

CHARLES: We will provide a $100,000 property tax exemption to all Mainers. That flows back into the economy again. I'm going to provide additional tax break for veterans, on the income tax, about a billion dollars in the first year, and we keep moving it down.
