Rob Sand on Government Reform

Primary elections should be open to any registered voter

State Auditor Rob Sand--a Democrat who's running for governor--says Iowa's Primary Elections should be open to any registered voter, not just to those who are registered as Democrats or Republicans. "The idea that right now in the state of Iowa a third of our state are registered independents whose tax dollars pay for elections that they are not allowed to vote in is unAmerican," Sand said.

Repeal law withholding information from state auditor

While Iowans are struggling with higher costs, the state's economy is 49th in the country, and "our state revenue has collapsed," Republicans passed a law to allow state agencies to withhold materials from his staff. "That's where their priorities are," he said. "It makes no sense, and I think it's the kind of stuff that people are sick of." If elected, he would ask the legislature to repeal that 2023 law, which he has repeatedly characterized as "the most pro-corruption bill in Iowa history."
