Fought for native Alaskan subsistence rights

Sykes has consistently fought for subsistence rights of all Alaska Native peoples and rural residents. In addition to a state constitutional amendment, ANILCA may need to be changed to its original intent of preserving Alaska's Native cultures involving special skills and knowledge, sharing and other cultural values that are part of subsistence. Support same-sex civil marriage

We need to protect people's rights rather than remove existing legal protections for committed long-term couples. Hospital visitation rights, inheritance rights, pension benefits and health insurance coverage could be taken away from same-sex couples if the amendment were to pass. Lesbian and gay couples deserve equal opportunity to make the same marriage commitments as anyone under the same rights and protections as other Americans. Continue affirmative action programs

Continue federal affirmative action programs.
Establish empowerment zones in areas with large numbers of unemployed people.
Considering race and gender in government contracting decisions is appropriate for the federal government.
