Michael Cavlan on Crime

Green Challenger

Death penalty is flawed and doesn’t teach nonviolence

Do you support or oppose the death penalty?

A: I strongly oppose the death penalty. 1) It’s irreversible. Many have died because our justice system is flawed. 2) It’s those who cannot afford to use the justice system in the same ways people do who can afford it that are on death row. 3) What is the point of doing to a person the same thing he/she has done? It’s much the same thing and certainly doesn’t teach and nurture nonviolence.

No justice in incarcerating minor criminals for life

Do you support or oppose mandatory sentencing laws?

A: Oppose. There is little difference made between violent and nonviolent offenses, drug possession offenses and drug distribution offenses and many others. So that too often people are incarcerated for life for relatively minor offenses. This is not justice.
