Supports university-industry-government research partnership

Universities are where polio vaccines, water purification systems, spaced-based weather forecasting, and disease-resistant grain and vegetables were invented, just to name a few [under government-sponsored research]. None of these things would have come to fruition if university research had not been transferred to private companies. In order for university research to serve the public good, it has to be developed into products and services. And that process, by definition, brings universities and private companies together. Public interest might not be served by illicit relationships between universities and corporations, but making it more difficult or cumbersome for university knowledge to go through technology transfer doesn’t serve the public, either. The future challenge of the university-industry-government partnership in research is to create relationships that balance the integrity of the academy and the transfer of technology within the context of the broader public interest. Voted NO on disallowing FCC approval of larger media conglomerates.

Vote to pass a joint resolution expressing congressional disapproval of the rule submitted by the Federal Communications Commission. The rule would therefore have no force or effect. The rule in question deals with broadcast media ownership and would allow media conglomerates to own more television stations and newspapers.
