Zell Miller on Budget & Economy
Vetoes 104 line items, $37M, of “wrong priorities”
Governor Zell Miller today slashed the FY 1998 state budget by $37.3 million by vetoing a record 104 line items. Governor Miller said he specifically line item vetoed the local assistance grants ($2.1 million) because the General Assembly removed that
same amount from higher education to fund those projects. “That is the wrong priority,” Governor Miller said. We have made our university system one of America’s finest, and we have come too far to turn back now.“ Governor Miller’s actions continue
his seven-year effort to cut costs, reduce the tax burden on Georgia citizens, make state government more efficient and strengthen the state’s financial balance sheets. Miller said, “I want the people of Georgia to know that I am watching their
state dollars as closely today as when I took office six years ago.”
The Governor also vetoed eight legislative bills that he said were fiscally irresponsible. These vetoes cut an additional $10.9 million from the budget.
