Doug Burgum on Immigration

Can't have national security unless we have border security

The possibility of a 9/11 type terror attack happening in our country has gone up dramatically, and I think the American people are ready to get behind a president who says we're going to make sure we can't have national security unless we have border security, and we can make that happen on day one. And part of it is just supporting the people that can do it. Executive orders, whatever it takes, we know that President Trump will close the border.

Biden funded 87,000 people at IRS instead of Border Patrol

And we have to be strong, and we have to be strong both in Ukraine, and we can solve the Southern border. Absolutely, we can do that, because guess what? There's only 19,855 authorized people for the Border Patrol. But they're not all staffed, because the Biden administration doesn't enforce law enforcement. But the Biden administration wanted to put 87,000 people in the IRS, as opposed to giving the money and the support we need to our own Border Patrol.

Sending National Guard to Texas strengthens border security

[On the US border]: "It's in the best interests of not only Texas but all states to prevent illegal entry at the U.S.-Mexico border and stop drug trafficking, human trafficking and other transnational criminal activity," Burgum said in a statement. "Support from the North Dakota National Guard & other states that have committed resources to Operation Lone Star will strengthen border security and help keep Americans safe in every state, as every community is affected by border security."

States are addressing border crisis ignored by Feds

And we pray for the safety of our North Dakota National Guard soldiers that are stationed both at home and abroad. And when I say at home, I mean including in Texas, securing our southwest border. The states have stepped up to address this incredible border crisis that the current administration apparently refuses to even fix or even acknowledge.

Strongly opposes transporting migrants to North Dakota

In a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Gov. Doug Burgum stressed his opposition to the transfer of detained migrants from the southern border to North Dakota being considered by DHS:

"As a northern border state, we have seen unsettling media reports that North Dakota is being considered by DHS officials as a site for the relocation of migrants detained at the south Texas border. Our administration does not support the transfer to North Dakota of migrants who have entered the US without permission. While our state willingly participates in the resettlement of legal, thoroughly vetted refugees, we strongly oppose any efforts to alleviate the southern border crisis of the overwhelming influx of migrants by transporting them to northern border states. We urge the administration to address this crisis at the source, fully enforce federal immigration laws, and reassure northern border states that relocation is not on the table."

Consider filing a lawsuit over refugee resettlement

Burgum said, "when North Dakota withdrew from the federal refugee resettlement program, the Federal Government, with questionable authority to do so, selected the non-profit Lutheran Social Services to oversee the refugee program in North Dakota. While I have tremendous compassion for these refugees, this action amounts to federal overreach. Filing a lawsuit against the federal government shouldn't be taken lightly, but it is certainly an option that deserves consideration and debate."
