Gretchen Whitmer on Principles & Values

Our message is simple: we will fight for your freedom

I want anyone living in a state that wants to control your body or deny your existence to know that Michigan has a place for you. Together, we are going to change Michigan from a state with century-old bans to forward looking protections. Our message is simple: we will fight for your freedom. And you know what? Let's go on offense. I'll go to any state that restricts people's freedoms and win business and hardworking people from them. I'm looking at you, Ohio and Indiana.

My fellow Michiganders, we live in a special place

Fatalism is in vogue as people wonder aloud whether America's best days are behind her. I reject that. We cannot mistake pessimism for intelligence. And we must never forget who we are. My fellow Michiganders, we live in a special place. Our beautiful state has played host to so much progress because of our unbreakable, hopeful spirit. As the world grapples with big challenges and asks itself tough questions, our responsibility as Michiganders is to roll up our sleeves and do the work.

Hateful rhetoric makes people much more fearful

I have been the recipient of so much ugliness and hate often stoked by the former president. This is a really scary moment. And with the proliferation of the ugly rhetoric, the scary proliferation of guns in America, and the fewer and fewer restrictions, I think that any parent who sends their child to school, any politician or policymaker who makes a hard decision, we now have to be much more fearful on a whole new level.

Michiganders expect results; impatience is a virtue

Michiganders are hardworking people. They expect results. They deserve leaders who will work hard... and get things done. They won't accept excuses, and neither will I. I am not here to play games. For those of you who want to keep playing games, I'm going to press on without you. I'm going to use the power of my office to do what I said I was going to do. Because for me, for Michigan, IMpatience is a virtue.

A better Michigan is worth fighting for, we can't wait

I'm no stranger to fights. As Ingham County Prosecutor and as Democratic leader in the Senate, I've led a lot of tough ones. Fights to protect workers' rights, fights to level the playing field for everyone, fights to protect kids and to hold government accountable. The fight was always worth it for what it said to the people we were fighting for. That's why I know we can build a Michigan with opportunities that rival those from our past. We can do better. We deserve better. And we can't wait.
