Governors Allen and Gilmore did the right thing by initiating Virginia’s Standards of Learning. Now we need a practical, hands-on executive who will complete the job and make educational excellence a reality
in Virginia. John Hager is determined to be that leader. No one ever said that the transition to higher standards would be easy, but with intelligent and energetic leadership we can make sure the
schools get the resources they need to do the job. Targeted remediation for students who need extra help is a big part of the answer. John Hager also supports early reading programs to get kids off to a good start, special attention to math
remediation in middle schools, computer and technology training in the high schools, workforce training in community colleges, and greater resources for research in our institutions of higher learning.

Institutional Performance Agreements for colleges
Hager believes that we should extend the standards and accountability movement to Virginia higher education.
He supports Institutional Performance Agreements with the General Assembly and executive branch to see that parents’ and students’ hard-earned tuition dollars and fee are well and wisely spent.

Character education should reinforce parental morality
Hager supports character education in the public schools that reinforces, not contradicts, what parents teach their children at home about moral and spiritual values.

Let parents direct their kids’ education
John Hager believes that parents possess the authority and responsibility to direct the upbringing and education of their children. That’s why he supports the Parents Investing in Education proposal,
which is a tax credit for parents to use on education expenditures for their children, such as computers, tutoring, tuition and curriculum materials.
