Scott Jensen on Abortion

Abortion is settled law in Minnesota, won't relitigate it

[At campaign announcement]: "Abortion, as far as I'm concerned, it's settled law in Minnesota and we're not going to relitigate it," Jensen said. "The [State] Supreme Court has indicated it's a constitutionally protected right for women. The executive and legislative branches have also weighed in and passed their own statutes, so I think that's settled law, so nothing really matters in that regard."

Let Minnesotans vote on constitutional abortion ban

Walz and GOP challenger Scott Jensen squared off over abortion early in the debate, with Jensen saying he would not ban abortion and Minnesotans should vote on the issue as a constitutional amendment. He also said the state needs to "share the responsibility and the challenge of planning families and planning pregnancies," including paid maternity benefits and a tax credit associated with adoption.

Walz stressed that governors can appoint Minnesota Supreme Court justices who interpret cases. "I just want to be absolutely clear, this is on the ballot," Walz said. "You get a choice here of a vision of Minnesota, one that questions our elections, one that tells women they can't make their choices, one that defunds our public schools or you get an opportunity that brought so many of us to Minnesota. An opportunity for a state that is inclusive," Walz said.

Christian faith compels fighting for unborn children

Scott is a doctor who has delivered hundreds of babies, he is a witness to miracles over and over again. He believes in the sanctity of human life, from conception to natural death. While not every child is born into ideal circumstances, every life matters. His Christian faith compels him to fight for the least among us and that starts with unborn children. Extremists who argue for late-term or partial-birth abortion do not represent Minnesota values.

Require exposure of abortion clinic employees for licensure

Legislative Summary:SF704 / HF812: Abortion facilities licensure requirement

Analysis by Planned Parenthood:This bill compromises patient and provider privacy, putting their safety at risk. This bill requires that abortion clinics report the names and license numbers of all "health care professionals" who work at the clinic in their applications for licensure. A politically motivated Commissioner of Health could use this legislation to target abortion providers for harassment.

Veto Message: House File 809 infringes upon women's basic right to health and safety--a right of every woman, regardless of the type of health insurance she has. This bill would interfere with critical medical decisions that should be made between a woman and her doctor.

Legislative Outcome:Passed House 79-53-0 on April 24, 2017; Passed Senate 38-7 on May 4; State Senator Scott Jensen voted YES; Vetoed by Gov. Dayton on May 10
