Rep. Bonner announced his resignation less than 5 months after being seated in the 113th Congress, to which he was elected unopposed to a two-year term. Bonner announced on May 23 that he was accepting a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" as Vice Chancellor for Government Relations and Economic Development at The University of Alabama System. The taxpayers of Alabama will foot the bill for a special election to replace Bonner; the dates announced by Gov. Robert Bentley are: Sept. 24 for the primary; then primary runoff on Nov. 5 (winner: Bradley Byrne, R); then the general election Dec. 17.
