Ed Gillespie on Homeland Security

Condemn deep and dangerous defense-budget cuts

The Republican nominee must condemn the president's precipitous drawdown in Afghanistan and his deep, dangerous defense-budget cuts. Both are viewed skeptically by the military: The former emboldens America's adversaries and discourages its allies; the latter is of deep concern to veterans and other Americans who doubt Obama's commitment to the military.

2004: Kerry voted against many important weapons systems

I gave a speech at the RNC Winter Meeting in which I laid out vote after vote John Kerry has cast as a US senator against important weapons systems, but only after I acknowledged his service to our country in Vietnam.

The media were looking for us to somehow try to disconnect Kerry's Vietnam service, but we believed that service deserved respect, and voters would rightly punish such a tactic. First of all, while President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard was honorable (and flying jets is not exactly risk-free duty), the president recognized that Kerry's service in Vietnam constituted a greater sacrifice. Second, while questions about his Purple Heart had floated around his political career for decades, we had no reason to believe (and didn't seek any) that Senator Kerry had not earned them.

No US troops under UN command; more defense spending.

Gillespie signed the Contract with America:

[As part of the Contract with America, within 100 days we pledge to bring to the House Floor the following bill]:

The National Security Restoration Act:
No US troops under UN command, and restoration of the essential parts of our national security funding to strengthen our national defense and maintain our credibility around the world.
