McCain's letter asked Donley to reconsider the relocation of the two squadrons, along with 1,000 service members, to Holloman by 2014. McCain said he is concerned about the Air Force spending about $47 million to prepare Holloman for the jet fighters.
Sanchez, an active member of the New Mexico Base Planning Commission, cited advantages Holloman has over Luke: the combination of airspace and an abundance of ramp space at Holloman "provides an environment for unmatched fighter training missions while ensuring the safety of personnel & aircraft." Sanchez also said transferring the two F-16 training squadrons from Luke to Holloman "is the appropriate move for our national security.
