Criminals prey on weak; they flee when we brandish a gun

The second amendment, affirming "the right of the people to keep and bear arms", allows law abiding citizens the means to defend themselves from those seeking to dominate and subdue them. Common criminals prey on the weak.

Most criminals flee when met with resistance. Having a potential victim simply brandish a gun more often than not causes criminals to flee. According to NRA statistics, each year US gun owners use firearms for protection up to 2.5 million times--meaning that once every 5 minutes a firearm is used for protection. Imagine if this right to self defense was removed. There'd be at least 2.5 million additional defenseless victims, probably many more. The criminal element would feel empowered to prey on a defenseless population.

Yet, personal protection was not the primary purpose of the Second Amendment. The amendment provided the last line of defense against a tyrannical government--foreign or domestic.
