Thomas Kean Jr. on Energy & Oil

Republican challenger

Don't require disclosure of renewables on electric bills

Excerpts from legislation: S 1707: Requires Increased Use of Renewable Energy This bill requires the percentage of renewable electricity sold in the State to increase once every five energy years between 2015 and 2050: from 11% in 2015 to 80% in 2050 percent of the electricity sold.

Legislative outcome:Kean voted NAY; Bill passed Senate 23-15-2; bill died in House.

Wean America off of fossil fuels altogether

Tom Kean will advance a comprehensive energy agenda to reduce our nation’s dependence on not just foreign oil, but on fossil fuels altogether. He opposes drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and supports incentives that will set a goal of achieving at least 20% of our electricity derived from clean, renewable sources by 2020. Tom supports weaning our nation off of fossil fuels by aggressively promoting the discovery and development of renewable, more efficient forms of energy. Tom believes that the time is long overdue for our nation to implement an energy policy that will make use of cleaner, safer, more environmentally friendly energy. This can be done by employing sources such as ethanol and bio-diesel fuel additives, which both help gasoline burn cleaner and longer, in addition to utilizing geo-thermal, wind, hydro, and solar power instead of burning coal.

Reservations about Kyoto Protocol, but supports it locally

Q: What role should the US play in the Kyoto Treaty?

KEAN: While our nation needs to address greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, I have reservations about the Kyoto Protocol, particularly because it allows India and China, two of the world’s fastest developing nations as well as the top emitters in greenhouse gasses, to pollute the environment without any penalty. However, I am pleased that our states and cities have begun phased implement of Kyoto targets, including the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

MENENDEZ: Global warming is more than a mere “inconvenient truth” and a threat to our environment, economy and lives. It is the issue that will define our generation’s success. It’s past due for America to finally ratify the Kyoto Protocol--a starting point for the international community to begin addressing this worldwide problem. Sadly, Kean fails to mention national standards to combat climate change--because Kean holds stock in Big Oil and takes their campaign contributions.

Drives a hybrid car; opposes drilling ANWR

Republican Thomas Kean Jr. bought a hybrid gas-electric Ford Escape this week and put a radio ad on his Web site attacking Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez for driving a gas guzzler to press conferences about high fuel prices.

A Menendez surrogate accused Kean of profiting from high gas prices because he has investments in?and took campaign contributions from?oil companies. The skirmish shows Kean is determined to keep Menendez from having a free hand to grab publicity and trash Republicans over gas prices.

Kean supports using alternative energy sources, such as his driving a hybrid. A spokesperson said, “He doesn’t have a plan right now to reduce prices. His plan is we need to have comprehensive reform, and when he gets to Washington, he’ll vote for comprehensive reform.” Kean also opposes drilling in ANWR.
