Nella Domenici on Principles & Values | |
We consider "issue-free campaigners" to be untrustworthy of
holding elected office--the IFFY award means they are "iffy" officeholders. Voters need to know how the candidate will actually vote on key issues. Nella Domenici did not say--an insult to her constituency--and voters should complain loudly and often.
In her case, she relies on to avoid the issues. OnTheIssues undertook due diligence--periodically reading the candidate's campaign website; repeatedly searching statewide media; and even
checking what our competitor issue archivists found--over the entire course of 2024. We managed only to answer 45% of VoteMatch questions by November 2024—our standard for first-time candidates is to find 70% of VoteMatch questions.
No-Answer Nella spent the majority of her primary campaign refusing to
do interviews with the media and dodging tough questions about issues, instead choosing to spend half a million dollars on a TV ad that conveniently glossed over her troubling record as Chief Financial Officer of Bridgewater Associates.
[The New Mexico Democrats dubbed Domenici as "No-Answer Nella" for responding to press questions with] "I'm not going to trap myself in answering hypotheticals".
Domenici brings a powerful name. The late Sen. Pete Domenici was a giant in New Mexico politics. He was first elected to the Senate in 1972, the same year as
Biden, and was in office until 2009 -- the longest-serving senator in the state's history. He was known for his work on budget and energy policy and had a prominent bipartisan streak.
