Susan Bysiewicz on Civil Rights

Same-sex couples deserve same rights as straight marrieds

Repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). In Connecticut, same sex couples are allowed to enter into a civil marriage. However, they are prohibited from filing joint federal income taxes and claiming deductions, receiving spousal benefits through Social Security, taking unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, or obtaining the protections of the estate tax when a spouse passes and wants to leave their possessions to another. This is fundamentally unfair.
