Mark Gordon on Principles & Values

Something about our western culture is simply extraordinary

There is something about Wyoming people and our western culture that is simply extraordinary. Folks here know there is more to being a cowboy than simply wearing a hat--it is knowing when to take it off, when to help your neighbor, and what is important to preserve for our children. We are a people with grit, courage, and kindness in our souls.

We always stand for our national anthem in Wyoming

Wyoming is a patriotic state, and that is why I remind everyone of the words of Article 1, Sections 2 and 3 of our Wyoming Constitution which speak clearly and emphatically about civil rights and equality for "all members of the human race." And that's why I remind the world that we always stand for our national anthem in Wyoming. This patriotism is found in one of the most amazing museums anywhere in the world, the National Museum of Military Vehicles.

Right now, the world needs more cowboys

There are a lot of things that come to mind when the term "cowboy" comes up. To me it is not a big hat, angora chaps, or tough talk. A cowboy is a decent, practical, hard-working, sort of person, whose humility is infectious, whose ability knows no bounds, and who would do anything for a buddy, knows horses, and is not afraid to admit mistakes. Right now, the world needs more cowboys.

Widower with two daughters; married single mom with two sons

Families come in all sizes and configurations with special challenges and considerations. Mine started out slowly. My wife and I struggled for years with infertility but with faith and perseverance we were eventually blessed with two daughters; Bea and Anne. Then in the rush of an early morning, [my wife] Sally died; the victim of a traffic accident. Suddenly, I was a single parent with a daughter one month away from entering kindergarten and another not yet ready for preschool. Later, I met Jennie Muir, herself a single parent, and together with her two sons, Aaron and Spencer, we put together the strong family we have today.

Our family includes three sets of grandparents, all of whom are critically important to our children. We believe all of the members of our family deserve to feel safe, loved, and secure. As a nation, and as people, we have an obligation to make sure our families stay strong, secure, and safe.
