Larry Hogan on Principles & Values

Republican Maryland Governor; possible presidential contender

I care about the country but don't aspire to run for Senate

Q: Republicans are trying to recruit you to run for Senate.

HOGAN: It's not something I aspire to, but I also have said that I care very much about the country and where we are and the divisiveness and dysfunction in Washington. People are calling on my patriotic duty to say, even if it's not the job that you want, maybe we need you to run anyway. And so that's where we are. I've never expressed an interest in it, and I still haven't taken any steps in that direction.

It's insane that people can believe lies about January 6

That's one of the reasons why I continue to speak up and tell the truth about what happened, because I think it's critically important. Frankly, it's crazy that that many people believe things that just simply aren't true, that they believe a different version of reality. To think that the violent protesters who attacked the Capitol on January 6 was just tourists looking at statues, it's insane that anyone could watch that on television and believe that's what happened.

The truth doesn't know party affiliation

We all desperately want to return to our normal lives. But no matter how difficult it is to hear, you deserve the truth. The truth doesn't know party affiliation. It doesn't care what any of us think or what we want. So many of the problems we face today as a nation are because politicians refuse to tell the hard truths when it doesn't fit their agenda.

Return to the party of Lincoln and Reagan

I gave a major address at the Reagan Institute where I said this is a time for choosing. You have to decide if we're going to return to the party of Lincoln and Reagan, or we're going to keep heading down this path of worshipping at the altar of Donald Trump. A lot of people, I think, chose wrongly. I'm embarrassed and ashamed of some of the members of Congress, some of the senators for their actions, especially after this attack on the Capitol, that they continued to head in that direction.

Return GOP to its roots, become a bigger tent

Q: What kind of influence does Trump have after he leaves the White House?

HOGAN: There's an awful lot of people that want to be the next Donald Trump. But I'm going to be fighting to try to return our party to its roots, and to become a bigger tent party to reach out, a more Reaganesque party, more positive, hopeful vision for the future.
