Alan Wilson on Energy & Oil

Opposed companies having to disclose climate change risks

[Union of Concerned Scientists disendorsement]: A state attorney general's (AG's) job includes "enforcing federal and state environmental laws." AGs in 5 states most vulnerable to climate change, however, are doing the exact opposite: Instead of defending their constituents, they are defending the fossil fuel industry. The AGs of each of the states--FL, LA, MS, SC, and TX--routinely collaborate on lawsuits and other actions to attack federal environmental safeguards, especially those designed to mitigate the impact of global warming.

South Carolina AG Alan Wilson bends over backward to help the fossil fuel industry, and he has been rewarded for doing so. Besides participating in the AG lawsuits and other actions, Wilson joined 23 other Republican AGs who threatened to sue the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) if the agency adopted a new rule requiring publicly traded companies to disclose their climate change-related risks and explain how they plan to address them.
