Summary by ACLU-SC in opposition, 6/18/25ACLU-SC reaffirms commitment to trans rights in the wake of Supreme Court's 6-3 Skrmetti decision. In May 2024, South Carolina lawmakers enacted House Bill 4624, which prohibits doctors from providing gender-affirming healthcare to transgender youth as well as many transgender adults. They passed the bill despite vocal opposition from leading medical organizations, pediatricians, LGBTQ+ South Carolinians, and parents of trans youth who warned the state that the law was discriminatory, harmful, and unneeded.

Legislative Outcome:Passed Senate 28-8-3 on May/2/24; passed House 67-26-31 on May/9/24; State Rep. Jermaine Johnson voted NO; signed by Governor Henry McMaster on May/21/24.
