Katie Hobbs on Health Care

Erased $642M in medical debt for nearly 500,000 people

To return security to their lives, I launched a historic initiative to cancel medical debt and deliver meaningful relief for working-class Arizonans. Before we took action, Arizonans owed 2.4 billion dollars worth of medical debt. Today, we've erased 642 million dollars in medical debt for nearly half a million people--without costing the state government a dime.

Expand access to family planning services

As a mother, I find it unacceptable that any baby should lose their mom to a preventable condition. Or that parents have to struggle to get healthcare for their kids. That's why I'm proud we worked together to provide 19,000 more children with health insurance through our KidsCare program. I also call on this Legislature to expand access to family planning services to keep moms healthy.

Offer communities badly needed access to healthcare

Working together, we will create a new generation of doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals, while offering communities across our state badly needed access to healthcare.

I am calling on this Legislature to work with me to begin a new engineering-focused medical school at Arizona State University; to double the size of University of Arizona medical schools; and to start a new medical school focused on serving rural and tribal communities at Northern Arizona University.

Expanded Medicaid, providing healthcare for 100,000s

In 2012, she arrived in the State Senate. And in 2014, she became the Senate Minority Leader. Katie fought for people all across the state, expanding Medicaid and providing healthcare for hundreds of thousands of Arizonans. She worked to secure the rights of victims of sexual and domestic violence. And she worked diligently and with integrity to provide new opportunities in education and job training, and to protect the voting rights of all the people of Arizona.

Reduce maternal mortality rate, extend Medicaid coverage

For Indigenous women, the maternal mortality rate was four times that of white women. And for Black, Asian and Pacific Islander women, maternal mortality was more than double the rate of white women. A key component of Katie's agenda will be to reduce maternal mortality. The Administration will also improve AHCCCS care for pregnant and postpartum women by extending Medicaid coverage from 60 days to 12 months postpartum.
