Phil Murphy on Families & Children

Introduce a new paid parental leave policy for state workers

I also believe that every working New Jerseyan should be entitled to another right: the right to paid parental leave. And with that in mind, today, I am proud to announce that our Administration will be taking a new step--as part of First Lady Tammy Murphy's Nurture NJ initiative--to strengthen the economic security of our state's families. Starting this year, we will introduce a new paid parental leave policy for the tens of thousands of public servants who work in state government.

Make New Jersey safest place to deliver and raise babies

We haven't lost sight of the maternal and infant health crisis that threatened the lives of our mothers and babies -- especially mothers and babies of color--long before the COVID-19 pandemic. No mother should ever endure the pain of losing her baby and no child should ever feel the deep loss of growing up without a mother. We are determined to make New Jersey the safest place in the nation to deliver and raise a baby.

Committed to more robust child-care support system

We cannot afford to miss out on the contributions of half our population. Harnessing the full economic power of all of our people requires providing real affordable options for child care that work for all families. We remain committed to easing the burden of working parents, especially moms, and creating an even more robust child-care support system.

We all can contribute, including the differently abled

We must immediately resist Washington's all-out assault on New Jersey. This is not as much a battle between Democrats and Republicans, but a battle between right and wrong--between standing up for the people of New Jersey or standing for failed Washington politics.

We will resist every move from President Trump and a misguided Congressional leadership that would worsen income inequality; or divide families or deny access to college for our Dreamers; or defund essential infrastructure; or gut health care for our children, seniors, and the working poor.

A stronger and fairer New Jersey is rooted in an economy that creates better jobs and provides higher wages ... that creates places where industries can grow and communities can rise, where innovative companies are born and where millennials want to live and where seniors want to retire ... and, which remembers that we all have value and we all can contribute, including, and especially, the differently abled.

Ensure that all workers have the right to earned sick leave

One million New Jersey workers do not receive earned sick leave. Too often as a result, these individuals must choose between their health and their job. Opponents of earned sick leave claim it will hurt workplace morale and lower performance, a claim unsupported by experience. In fact, earned sick leave creates a more healthy and productive workplace. Phil Murphy will work to ensure that all workers have the right to earned sick leave.
