Reform laws to help victims of sex trafficking

Let's build on the work done by the GRACE Commission by implementing more training programs that equip Georgians to prevent instances of sex slavery. Let's make common sense reforms to our laws, so survivors seeking a name change to build a new life no longer have to take out an ad in the paper that puts their safety at risk, and let's strengthen our statutes to add a civil remedy that allows victims to seek court action against their traffickers or those who knowingly aided in trafficking. Veto increase placement in Serious Juvenile Offender Program

AB806: Relating to: acts for which a juvenile may be placed in correctional placement or the Serious Juvenile Offender Program.

Summary by Wisconsin Justice Initiative: AB 806 broadens the criteria for the Serious Juvenile Offender program--the kind of program most states have eliminated. We know that incarcerating more children will not help the youth nor will it make our communities safer.

Veto Message: I am vetoing this bill in its entirety because I object to increasing the number of youths that could be placed in the serious juvenile offender program when science informs us that a punitive disposition system leads to worse outcomes.

Granted the first pardons in our state in nine years

I also promised that criminal justice reform would be a central focus of my administration. Part of reforming our criminal justice system is believing in forgiveness and the power of redemption--things that I think speak to the character of our state. I made good on my campaign promise to reinstate the pardon review board. We granted the first pardons in our state in nine years, offering forgiveness and a second chance to folks who've made amends in their lives and communities.
