Stop funding education via increased tax on businesses

Burt Cohen said business interests are being threatened as education funding continues to be `an 800-pound gorilla' on the backs of lawmakers. The state is facing a $50 million deficit. The Legislature increased the business enterprise and business profits taxes for two years in a row. "It's quite possible businesses will be looked at again for revenue," he said. Cohen said the primary rule of legislators in regard to business should be `do no harm.' One way lawmakers could help out business is to increase the amount of losses companies can deduct and carry forward on their taxes. New Hampshire ranks last in the country in this area, he said.
