Richard Randall on Health Care

Right to assisted suicide

The right to life. liberty and the pursuit of happiness also includes the right to end one's life. I will work for the repeal of all laws interfering with the right of an individual to commit suicide as infringements of the ultimate right of an individual over his or her own life. [Regarding] "Physician Assisted Suicide"-allowing people who are terminally ill and in intractable pain to get a lethal prescription from their physician-the federal government [should not] interfere.

Separation of medicine from the federal government

I believe that government involvement is the principal cause of many of the problems we face in the health care system today. Therefore I favor restoring and reviving a free market health care system. I advocate a complete separation of medicine from the federal government. Government should recognize the right of individuals to determine the level of insurance they want, the level of care they want, the medicines and treatments they will use, and all other aspects of their medical care.

End ban on reimportation of drugs from Canada

Americans are currently paying premium prices for drugs that are available in other countries, such as the UK and Canada, at significantly reduced prices. In many cases these drugs were manufactured and exported from the United States! I will support ending the current FDA ban on imported drugs.

Allow unlimited medical malpractice lawsuits

As a conservative estimate, every year medical errors kill 50,000 people! This is an intolerable situation, especially considering that it's taking place in the United States, which leads the world in medical advances. The cause, according to the Institute of Medicine, is not as much recklessness on the part of doctors, nurses and other health providers as it is basic flaws in the way hospitals, clinics and pharmacies operate. That kind of problem is correctable. However, the government response to these numbers has been to promote tort reform-limiting the amount of money people can be rewarded when suing a doctor or hospital for malpractice! By limiting the liability for incompetence, the government is essentially working to perpetuate this problem.

As U.S. Senator, I will work to eliminate these tort reforms and allow the courts to determine what is just and fair compensation for the pain, suffering and death caused by health care worker incompetence and medical malpractice.
