Tom Birmingham on Education

Former State Senate President; Democratic Challenger MA Governor

$106M yearly for early childhood education

In 1994, it was Tom Birmingham who started a program providing high quality pre-schooling to the children of working families.“The state wasn’t responding to the needs of families with a single parent or with both parents working,” Tom explains. His community partnership program provides $106 million each year to ensure that, in his words, “more and more kids are starting school ready to learn.”

$55M in new school building projects this year

To help local cities and towns replace dangerous, outmoded, and overcrowded schools, Tom helped secure $55 million to launch new school building projects this year. As he has long urged, the state will include major renovation of buildings in the program to provide a more rational decision-making process for the benefit of communities. And to bring our kids the latest in high tech computers and equipment, Tom secured a $55 million capital investment fund for education technologies.

Every student can attend college for $500 per year

Tom successfully led the fight for a scholarship program to ensure that every student in the Commonwealth can attend a community college for $500 a year or less. This year the State College Access Grant program provides free or reduced tuition at state colleges. He helped create a tax deduction for college tuition payments for working families struggling to educate their children. Tom [worked] to secure millions more for scholarships and for educational funding for public higher education.

Equal educational opportunity regardless of where kids live

In 1993, Tom Birmingham co-authored the historic Education Reform Act to address the crippling inequalities of Massachusetts’ education system and to give equal educational opportunity to every kid regardless of where he or she lives.

Tom’s sweeping education reform brought new curricula and performance-based testing for students; higher standards for teachers; more accountability for teachers and administrators; and secured over $2 billion in new state funding for our schools.
