University students feel targeted by DEI layoffs

The Texas law, which took effect Jan. 1, bans diversity, equity and inclusion offices and programs at public universities and colleges. Democratic State Rep. Gina Hinojosa, who is a UT Austin alum, said she has heard from professors and students who are "scared and feel targeted by what has happened." Hinojosa and State Rep. Sheryl Cole are part of a group of lawmakers who hope to meet with the university about the staff terminations.

Filed bill to ban use of the "gay/trans panic" defense

House Bill 73 would have banned the use of the "gay/trans panic" defense. "Currently in the state of Texas, a criminal penalty for a defendants' violence, including murder, can be lessened or eliminated if the perpetrator claims that the victim's gender identity or sexual orientation triggered a mental breakdown that resulted in their loss of self control and subsequent assault," state Representative Gina Hinojosa, a Democrat who filed HB 73, said during the public hearing.
