Mandela Barnes on Civil Rights

Joined celebration of LGBTQ+ community's contributions

Outside the bar, Annie Eiler smiled and shed a few tears of joy. Eiler and Nancy Garrison co-owned the Napalese from 1999 to 2012 and joined a long line of LGBTQ+ bars dating back into the 1970s that closed their front doors to ward off harassment, threats, vandalism and assaults from the broader community. To see more than 500 people, led by the city's mayor and Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, come out to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community's contributions to the area was a bit overwhelming for Eiler.

Chaired the legislature's Black and Latino Caucus

Prior to serving as Lt. Governor, Mandela was elected to the State Assembly where he emerged as a champion on issues of the environment, economy, education, racial justice, and health care. He became the chair of the legislature's Black and Latino Caucus in his first term, became a national leader on gun violence prevention, and was recognized as one of the top pro-growth progressive leaders in the country.
