Conservation must become cornerstone of energy policy

Federal policy ought to support alternative energy initiatives instead of getting in their way. Although there is no import tariff on petroleum from the Middle East, we impose a 54 cent/gallon tariff on ethanol imported from Brazil, the world's low-cost producer of ethanol. This drives up the cost of motor fuel at the pump now that ethanol is a required additive. Efficiency and conservation must become the cornerstones of our national energy policy. Foster new refineries, and new on- and off-shore drilling

America is addicted to foreign oil. Jan supports President Bush's efforts to end our "addiction to oil". Jan is committed to finding innovative, environmentally responsible ways to explore new energy alternatives. Jan says, "We must foster the growth of every alternative energy source. We can't complain about high energy prices but also oppose all nuclear energy, all new refineries, and all new on- and off-shore drilling."
