Rae Vogeler on Immigration

Don't criminalize immigrants; focus on working conditions

Q: Your views on encouraging immigration?

A: Strongly Favor. Immigrants play a vital role in our country and our economy. The undocumented immigrant's current lack of rights force many to work for poor wages in deplorable working conditions. This ready pool of exploitable labor makes it easier for employers to drive down wages and working conditions for all workers. Rather than criminalize immigrants, we should seek to raise their living standards both here and in the countries they emigrate from

Criminalizing immigrants hurts civil liberties & due process

The Border Protection Bill (HR4437) allows the government to prosecute anyone who has regular contact with an undocumented immigrant, including family members, employers, and immigrant advocates. It undermines both civil liberties and due process. It ignores the root causes of migration to the United States and the social and economic conditions of both legal and undocumented workers. It will drive undocumented immigrants further underground and increase their vulnerability to exploitation.
